A Mindful Pause After Comparing Yourself
A photograph, achievement or conversation can suddenly become a measure of your whole life. This exercise does not ask you to declare yourself better or dismiss the other person. It returns the comparison to a smaller, more specific scale.
Before you begin
Use a comfortable pause after an ordinary comparison. Put aside the image or conversation if you can. There is no need to share or write down personal details.
The practice
Name the particular comparison
Use a short sentence: I am comparing this part of my life with that part of theirs. Avoid expanding it into a judgement about your entire worth.
Notice the missing frame
Acknowledge that you are seeing a portion of another life and living inside the details of your own. You do not need to invent problems in their life to recognise that difference.
Find what matters beneath it
Ask whether the comparison points toward something you value: friendship, rest, learning or recognition. You may not know yet.
Choose a local action
Find one action available in your actual circumstances. It can be very small, or the choice to leave the comparison alone for now.
A small ending.
What matters to me here, apart from keeping score?
Carry it into your day
You can admire someone and still notice the cost of measuring yourself against them. The useful question is what the moment reveals about your own next step, not who should win.
Make it your own
If reflecting on the comparison keeps it going, skip to noticing the room and doing one familiar activity. Analysis is optional.
A question to keep
What matters to me here, apart from keeping score?
