Mindful Reading: Stay With One Paragraph
You can reach the end of a page without meeting much of it. This practice slows down one paragraph so that reading becomes an encounter rather than a task to finish. Choose a book, an article or a passage you already have.
Before you begin
Select a short passage you can revisit comfortably. It need not be spiritual writing. Use large text, a screen reader or another accessible format if that suits you.
The practice
Read once for meaning
Read or listen to the paragraph at your ordinary pace. Ask what it appears to be saying before deciding whether you agree.
Stay with one phrase
Choose a phrase that catches your attention. Revisit it without turning it immediately into a quotation to collect or share.
Separate the two voices
Notice the difference between the words on the page and your response to them. Curiosity, disagreement and uncertainty all belong here.
Close with one question
Write a brief question if helpful, or hold it quietly. Close the passage and give the reading a small ending before opening something else.
A small ending.
What did the passage say, and what did I add?
Carry it into your day
Slow reading is not automatic agreement. A sentence can be beautifully written and still deserve questioning. The space around a paragraph can help you hear both the text and your own response.
Make it your own
Use a single sentence or an audio passage. If a passage feels unhelpful, choose another; staying does not mean forcing yourself through it.
A question to keep
What did the passage say, and what did I add?
