A Mindful Pause Before Saying Yes
Sometimes agreement arrives before you have checked what is being asked. This practice makes room for a considered answer to an ordinary request. It does not decide whether you should say yes or no.
Before you begin
Use this when the situation allows time to consider. Urgent responsibilities may need an immediate response. You can keep the exercise silent and brief.
The practice
Hear the actual request
Identify what the person is asking you to do, and when. Ask a clarifying question if the request is vague.
Check your available capacity
Consider the time, effort or attention involved in your real circumstances. Notice a wish to please without treating it as your only reason.
Allow a pause
If you need more time, say when you can answer. A specific return point is often clearer than an indefinite maybe.
Choose a clear response
Say yes, no, or offer a smaller alternative you can actually honour. You do not need a flawless explanation to be straightforward.
A small ending.
Is this an answer I can realistically honour?
Carry it into your day
A mindful answer may still be uncomfortable. The aim is to hear the request and your circumstances before responding, not to make every interaction easy.
Make it your own
If there is only a moment, ask yourself: do I understand what I am agreeing to? You can clarify a commitment later if necessary.
A question to keep
Is this an answer I can realistically honour?
