THE PRACTICE TROUBLESHOOTER

Change the practice to meet the moment.

Choose what is getting in the way. Explore one adjustment, then decide whether to continue, try another approach or stop. You do not have to push through.

AN ADJUSTMENT TO TRY

My attention keeps wandering

The invitation is to notice a shift and return, rather than hold attention perfectly still.

Try this

Choose one visible edge for a short pause. When you notice that you have moved into a thought, acknowledge it once and look at the edge again. Let that return be the whole task.

Leave a little pressure out

Counting every distraction can become another task to manage. You can leave counting out.

Was returning possible, even once?

AN ADJUSTMENT TO TRY

I keep checking the clock

A timer can help with a boundary, but it does not have to stay in view.

Try this

Choose a short session and hide its countdown. Alternatively, practise without timing and finish after noticing three ordinary details. Decide the boundary before starting.

Leave a little pressure out

A longer session is not required to make the practice count. Keep a length you can comfortably choose.

What would make the ending clear enough to stop checking?

AN ADJUSTMENT TO TRY

I do not want to focus on breathing

You can choose another object of attention. There is no need to change the pace or depth of your breathing.

Try this

Keep your eyes open and notice an ordinary object, or listen to sounds already present. If neither is inviting, stop and return to a familiar activity.

Leave a little pressure out

Do not force a breath exercise to match an instruction that is not useful for you.

AN ADJUSTMENT TO TRY

Sitting still does not fit today

A practice can include ordinary movement and changes of posture.

Try this

If it is comfortable, choose a short, clear route and notice a few natural steps. Stay aware of the surroundings. You can also change your seated position or use the household-task practice.

Leave a little pressure out

You do not need to slow down dramatically or hold an uncomfortable posture.

Would movement give attention a more natural place to return?

AN ADJUSTMENT TO TRY

I have almost no time

A useful beginning can be smaller than a full session.

Try this

Choose one daily cue, such as setting down a cup. Notice contact, one sound or one visible detail. Then continue with your next action. A few moments are a complete experiment.

Leave a little pressure out

Do not turn a missed longer session into a reason to abandon a small available pause.

Where is there already a natural break in my day?

AN ADJUSTMENT TO TRY

The practice feels flat or boring

You do not have to produce a special experience. You can explore a familiar thing with a different question.

Try this

Look at a scene first as a collection of details, then as the space between them, then as a whole. Notice whether changing the question changes what you see. Stop when the experiment feels complete.

Leave a little pressure out

Searching for a dramatic result can make an ordinary practice feel insufficient. Curiosity can stay small.

What changes when I change the way I look?

AN ADJUSTMENT TO TRY

Silence feels unhelpful

Quiet is an option, not a measure of progress. Written guidance and awareness of the room can remain part of a practice.

Try this

Choose supportive guidance with your eyes open. If inward attention is not useful, name one ordinary thing in the room and return to your day. You can end a session at any point.

Leave a little pressure out

You do not have to earn a quieter setting or continue an exercise that feels wrong for you.

Would more guidance, a different anchor or stopping fit better?

AN ADJUSTMENT TO TRY

I have not practised for a while

You do not need to recover missed days before beginning again.

Try this

Choose a practice you remember or try one new anchor. Make this session short enough to approach without bargaining. Let today stand on its own.

Leave a little pressure out

A streak does not need to be repaired. Choose the next practice from your circumstances now.

What is a manageable beginning today?
