Mindfulness After Scrolling
A feed can place distant events, advertisements and other people’s milestones side by side. After closing it, you may still be moving through those images in your mind. This exercise creates a visible ending to a screen session without asking you to judge the time you spent there.
Before you begin
Finish any urgent task and put the device somewhere stable. Keep your eyes open. Choose a comfortable place where a short pause will not interfere with your responsibilities.
The practice
Close one opening
Finish with the app or page you were using. You can leave the device on if you need to stay reachable. Notice the physical edge of the screen.
Change the scale
Look at something nearby, then something farther away in the room. Let your gaze rest comfortably. Notice that your surroundings extend beyond the device.
Sort one remaining thought
If an image or story stays with you, ask whether it calls for a practical action now. If it does, name that action. If not, let it remain something you saw.
Rejoin an ordinary activity
Choose a concrete next action: refill a glass, open the document you need, or speak to someone nearby. Begin it before opening another feed.
A small ending.
What from the screen needs action, and what can remain something I saw?
Carry it into your day
This is an ending ritual, not a test of self-control. You can care about something you read without keeping the feed open. A planned action can carry that care into the rest of your day.
Make it your own
If visual attention feels tiring, keep your gaze easy and use the weight of the device or the chair beneath you as the first point of contact.
A question to keep
What from the screen needs action, and what can remain something I saw?
