When a thought keeps returning
Why do I keep replaying the same conversation?
Try the practice →Ask what the next replay would add
A remembered conversation can feel unfinished even when it is over. Before rehearsing it again, ask whether there is information to seek, a decision to make or an action to take. Write one useful step in plain words. If there is no step available now, you can acknowledge the open question without working on it for the rest of the evening.
Give attention another place to go
Look around the room and notice something that has not been part of the replay: a colour, a sound or the contact of your feet with the floor. This is a small change in what you attend to. A thought may continue to appear while you also notice your surroundings and carry on with an ordinary task.
Match the reading to the difficulty
Beyond Overthinking focuses on repeated worry and mental rehearsal. Calm in the Middle of It All looks at workload, pressure and workable limits. Letting Go of Control explores the boundary between responsible effort and an outcome you cannot guarantee. Compare the opening readings to find the question closest to yours.
Leave a usable note
A long account can become another rehearsal. Try three short lines: what happened, what remains unknown, and what you will do next. The next step might be a question for tomorrow or a decision to leave the matter alone for now. Revisit the note when there is something new to add.
