READINGS FOR REAL QUESTIONS

Self-inquiry, grounded in everyday life

Who am I beyond my thoughts and roles?

Try the practice →

Start with an ordinary description

A name, a job and a family role can all be useful answers to “Who are you?” Self-inquiry begins by looking at what those descriptions include and what they leave out. Think of one role you enter during the day. What changes when you leave that situation? What responsibilities continue? Stay with a concrete example.

Notice the sentence as well as its subject

You may notice a thought such as “I always get this wrong.” Look at the words before treating them as a complete description. What happened on this occasion? What does “always” add? This kind of inquiry can make room for a more accurate account while keeping attention on the situation that needs a response.

Choose the question you want to stay with

Who Are You Beyond Your Thoughts? examines roles and personal narratives. The Awareness Behind the Noise explores noticing experience. The Spiritual Ego considers ambition and comparison within practice itself. Each book uses short readings, but they take inquiry in different directions. Their opening pairs provide a way to compare.

Return to an action you can take

Reflection can end in a conversation, a correction or a small choice. You do not need a final theory of identity before doing what the day asks of you. If a question becomes tiring or abstract, put it aside and notice your surroundings. Return later with a fresh, ordinary example.
