READINGS FOR REAL QUESTIONS

Starting meditation in ordinary life

Where do I begin with meditation?

Try the practice →

Begin with something you can actually do

A first practice can be two minutes spent looking at an ordinary object. Choose a place where you can sit or stand safely. Notice an edge, a colour or a patch of light. When your attention moves to a plan or a memory, return to one visible detail. The return is part of the exercise. You do not need to wait until your thoughts have stopped.

Find an approach you are willing to repeat

Some people prefer sound, some movement, and some the contact of a chair or floor. Try one approach at a time so you can notice what fits. A longer session is not automatically a better starting point. Choose a small place in your day: after making tea, before opening a document, or after finishing a task.

Choose a book by its first reading

Begin Where You Are concentrates on starting and adapting a daily practice. Spiritual Wisdom Meditations opens into broader spiritual questions. Meditation Beyond Explanation offers exercises and reflection on attention. Read their opening passages below before deciding which approach you want to explore.

Bring it into the day

After a session, choose one ordinary action and do it with a little more attention. You might listen to a sentence without preparing your reply or notice the first few steps of a walk. An evening reflection can be as simple as recalling what you noticed. There is no need to turn it into a score.
