EVERYDAY PRACTICE / 5 MINUTES

A Mindfulness Practice by the Window

A view does not have to be beautiful to offer something to notice. A wall, a tree, a roofline or changing light can be enough. This exercise widens attention while letting thoughts remain part of the moment.

Before you begin

Choose a comfortable, safe place near a window or a view within your room. Do not look directly at the sun. Keep normal awareness of your surroundings and responsibilities.

The practice

  1. Find one still feature

Notice a line or shape that appears relatively still: a frame, roof or wall. Let your gaze rest without straining.

  2. Notice what changes

Look for a change in light, a shadow, a leaf or a passing movement. If nothing moves, notice how your attention shifts between details.

  3. Include the frame

Let both the view and the room around you belong to your attention. There is no need to make your gaze unfocused or produce a special state.

  4. Return with one detail

Choose one ordinary thing you noticed. Turn back to the room and your next activity without needing to capture or photograph it.

Carry it into your day

A thought can be present without taking up the whole field. This exercise offers another object of attention; it does not promise that difficult thoughts will disappear.

Make it your own

Without a window, use a shelf, a doorway or the sounds in the room. For an illustrated version, explore the Attention Observatory.

A question to keep

What else is here alongside the thought?
