EVERYDAY PRACTICE / 3 MINUTES

Mindfulness for the First Three Bites

A meal can become another task completed beside a screen. This invitation is smaller than changing your eating habits: notice the beginning of one meal. After three bites, continue in whatever way fits the setting.

Before you begin

Use food you have already chosen and follow your own dietary and accessibility needs. This exercise is optional. If attention to eating is unhelpful for you, use the cup practice with an empty cup instead.

The practice

  1. See what is here

Before beginning, notice one colour, shape or arrangement. Avoid turning the observation into a judgement about whether the meal is good enough.

  2. Notice the first bite

Eat at a comfortable pace. Notice one quality of texture or taste without needing to name it precisely. Swallow as you normally would.

  3. Make room for the setting

With the next two bites, include the table, conversation or sounds around you. You do not need to shut out other people to pay attention.

  4. Let the exercise end

After three bites, stop the exercise. Continue your meal normally. Nothing needs to be recorded, earned or corrected.

Carry it into your day

The boundary matters: this is a brief experiment in attention, not a set of eating rules. Noticing more or less does not make a meal a success or failure.

Make it your own

Skip taste and texture if they are not comfortable anchors. Notice the table or a nearby sound, or choose a different practice entirely.

A question to keep

Can I notice the beginning of something without managing the whole experience?
