Mindfulness Before You Pick Up Your Phone
Before the day becomes a list of other people’s requests, give one ordinary thing your attention. You do not need to earn a peaceful morning or delay an important message. This small practice simply makes the first screen interaction a choice.
Before you begin
Use this after waking or at the first comfortable pause in your morning. If you rely on your phone for accessibility, caregiving or urgent contact, keep those functions available.
The practice
Meet the room
Look at a familiar edge: a window frame, a shelf or a patch of light. Notice one quality you would normally skip. If looking is not useful, notice contact with the bed or chair.
Notice the reach
If your hand moves toward the phone, pause for a moment. What are you reaching for: information, company, a task, or something to fill the space? An uncertain answer is fine.
Name one purpose
Choose the first useful thing you want to do with the device. Checking a necessary message counts. You do not have to choose the most virtuous activity.
Make a deliberate beginning
Pick up the phone, or leave it where it is. When that first action is complete, look back toward the room once before choosing what comes next.
A small ending.
What deserves the first small piece of my attention today?
Carry it into your day
The practice ends with using or leaving the phone, not with proving you can resist it. Notice whether naming a purpose changes the next action; it does not have to change your mood.
Make it your own
If mornings are rushed, use just the third step. One clearly named purpose is a complete practice.
A question to keep
What deserves the first small piece of my attention today?
